FOR PARENTS:

What is Ready for Kindergarten?

READY! for Kindergarten™ is a program that encourages parents and caregivers to engage in the learning  process with their children through activities that foster essential pre-literacy, pre-math and social-emotional skills. By following the researched-based curriculum, parents will learn about age-appropriate activities that are designed for children from birth-age 5. There are three classes per age group offered.

Why should I sign up?

Everything in the READY! for Kindergarten™ program is provided  for FREE! By attending these free classes, parents and caregivers will receive over $65 worth of free toys and materials as well as free childcare on site. The program is designed to help participants prepare children with the early learning skills needed to start and stay at grade level throughout their scholastic career. You, the parent or caregiver, are your child’s most powerful teacher. With READY! for Kindergarten you plant the seeds for success in school and a lifelong love of learning for your child.

How long are the classes?

Each class will be 90 minutes long and free childcare will be provided for the duration of the class.

Is there an orientation?

Orientation is for adults attending READY! for the first time. It is typically offered 30-45 minutes prior to the age-level classes. The purpose is to generate understanding of why school readiness is important,  motivate parents to apply what they learn in the age-level class, and  inspire a lasting commitment to attend READY! until their child enters school.

I’m pregnant. Can I still sign up?

Absolutely! This program would be especially helpful to first-time parents who are unsure of what to expect and need ideas on how to interact with their child by attending the 0-1 age based classes.

How do I sign up?

Please fill out our Ready! parent registration form found at  https://goo.gl/forms/9DHmvzodCPsCDe4Y2

FOR FACILITATORS:

The first five years are some of the most influential years of a child’s life. Parents and caregivers play a key role in shaping their child’s developing language, literacy, math and social-emotional skills. When you provide READY! for Kindergarten classes, you help parents prepare their children to start school with established early learning skills. Through a series of three classes, READY! teaches parents how their children learn and develop, and then provides tools and activities for parents and children to enjoy together at home.

School Readiness

Why is school readiness important?

A child’s first school experiences can influence the way they relate to themselves and others for the rest of life. That’s why it’s important to make sure that when your child begins school, they are developmentally ready to learn and participate in classroom activities.  By starting kindergarten with a strong foundation, you set your child up for success for years to come.

How can I tell if my child is ready for kindergarten?

When trying to determine if your child is ready for kindergarten, consider their readiness to learn.  Is your child able to communicate and listen well?  Is your child able to get along well with others?

The figure below represents a list of skills that are helpful for children to have when they enter kindergarten.  Keep in mind that this is the ideal kindergarten skill set, so don’t worry if your child has not mastered specific skills.  This is simply a guideline.

School Readiness Skills Begin at Home

Children have the best chance of succeeding in school when they have parental support at home.  Work with your child to assess which of the above skills they have mastered and set small goals to build your child’s set of skills.  Using small blocks of time, focus on one or two skills at once.  School readiness skills are best taught in small doses, with repetition over months, and without pressuring your child.  Try to help your child develop physical and language skills in the course of regular activities. The more you talk and do with your child, the more easily his or her skills will develop naturally.  So, enjoy your time together with many varied activities, environments, stimulating conversations, and lots of reading and singing!
